Live From the Studio with Kyla Gilbert

Join the recipient of the Griffin Art Projects Annual Emily Carr University Studio Residency Award, Kyla Gilbert, to learn what she has been up to through her time at Griffin! Kyla Gilbert is a visual artist based out of Vancouver BC on the unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. She graduated with a BFA in performance from Concordia University in 2017 and spent the two subsequent years touring as a puppeteer with DJ Kid Koala. During her time as a puppeteer, she became interested in the inherent animacy of objects. Her current practice revolves around chance encounter with found objects, which she combines with constructed elements made from industrial materials. Through her sculptural pieces, she considers the importance of mutual support, and the moments of pleasure, absurdity and messiness that can be found in material relationships. Kyla completed her MFA in Studio Art from Emily Carr University in the spring of 2022.
