Open Studio and Book Launch

Join us in-person at Griffin Art Projects on Sunday, August 27 for a multi-event celebration to close the summer! From 12 - 2 PM, Griffin will host a reception for Per Diem: The Gerd Metzdorff Collection, a lushly illustrated full-colour publication featuring Canadian and international artists from Metzdorff’s stunning collection. Refreshment, food and remarks from Grant Mann and David Birdsall will celebrate the Metzdorff collection along with artists featured in the publication. At 2:30 PM, the final exhibition tour with Emmett Hanly will provide the inside scoop on this enigmatic collector’s choices. And from 12 - 5 PM, Griffin will also host Open Studios with artists Jaewoo Kang, ECU x Griffin Graduate Studio Award Winner Marion Landry, and August Curator-in-Residence, Bernard Liebov.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Per Diem: The Gerd Metzdorff Collection chronicles the extensive art collection of Gerd Metzdorff. Ranging from drawing, painting, photography, installation and sculpture, Metzdorff’s collection was drawn together over a period of almost forty years. Metzdorff began collecting contemporary art while working as a flight attendant and his collection may be said to parallel his international travels. Originally derived from the per diem funds provided to him by the airline where he was employed as a steward, Metzdorff’s keen eye allowed him to amass a collection of some of the most important artists and movements in contemporary art.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: The exhibitions Per Diem and Per Diem II, presented at Griffin in 2022 and 2023 respectively, as well as their accompanying publication, could not have been possible without the generosity of David Birdsall and Grant Mann. We are grateful to the Freybe Foundation and North Vancouver Recreation and Culture for their ongoing support of all of our programs. We acknowledge the BC Arts Council for their generous support of Griffin Art Projects’ Residency Programs. The open studio featuring Griffin x ECU STUDIO Award Winner Marion Landry is organized in partnership between Griffin Art Projects and Shumka Centre at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. Brought to you by RBC.

About our Artists-in-Residence

Jaewoo was born in Busan, Korea, currently living and working in the stolen and unceded land of xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. His training in art started with visual art, which allowed him to be an interdisciplinary artist. A major theme for him is queer eroticism and how intimate moments with others can allow the self to have an introspective experience. In 2020, he has received Canada Council and BC Arts Council to make his first animated short, Lover, Come Back to Me, which is in post-production at the moment.

Marion Landry creates site-adjusted installations that use light, temperature, and traditional painting techniques to immerse viewers in a sensory experience. Her art practice is grounded in a phenomenological approach prioritizing the embodied experience of painting. Landry's career as a 3D architecture visualization specialist informs how she observes, organizes, and translates the pictorial plane. She obtained her BFA and MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and has exhibited internationally since 1999. Landry is a Francophone originally from Montreal and currently lives and works on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations in Vancouver.
